As a Specialist Performing Arts school, we emphasise the importance of creativity in our students' education. Although there are many opportunities to participate in the Arts at TPS, we're not a "Fame" school!
All our students follow a broad curriculum, but our specialism allows us to offer extra lessons in Dance and Drama at Key Stage3, plus a wider range of GCSE and Diploma courses at Key Stage 4. When first designated as a Specialist Arts College in 2004, we aimed to become the centre of excellence in East Hampshire. We have more than fulfilled that ambition, having gained individual and school recognition at both regional and national levels.
TPS regularly takes part in national initiatives such as the Global Rock Challenge, the National Theatre New Writing Scheme, and the Red Cross Dance for Life. Some of our students have gone on to study the Arts at university; others have performed professionally, joined the London School of Contemporary Dance, worked with the National Youth Theatre – and even appeared on television in "Britain’s Got Talent" and "The X Factor"!
Our Performing Arts centre, The Studio@TPS, is both a teaching space and a 200-seat theatre with state-of-the-art equipment. We stage regular concerts and shows involving our students: recent productions include "Oliver!", "Fugee", "Alice in Wonderland" and "The Black Remote". All Year 7 pupils get involved in the Autumn Spectacular, a performing arts showcase for our new arrivals.
We also have specialist rooms and facilities for music, art, pottery, photography and textiles, plus a dedicated Dance Studio. Our aim is to open up all students to the widest possible range of experiences – for example we go to the Royal Ballet every year, and we're among the few state schools to go to the opera at Glyndebourne. We run regular trips to productions in the West End and beyond, encouraging whole families to come together.
